Encounter mechanics
Norsca/Tomb Kings: different outcomes
Norsca and Tomb Kings have different outcomes. Open the Detailed Event Guide and tick “Show Norsca & Tomb Kings outcomes” to see them.
Random buff outcomes
Each buff choice gives one of its two outcomes. Each outcome has a 50% chance.
Battle choices
First option triggers a Vampire Coast battle. Victory is required for the main event reward. Losing gives no scripted victory reward.
Battle stance
Battle events require a stance that can attack. Passing through in a stance that cannot attack leaves the treasure alone. Sea treasures that require no battle can be collected in a stance that cannot initiate battles.
Extra sea loot
Adds 7,000 gold when the lord or faction has the Increased plunder from encounters at sea bonus; having both does not double it. Sources include the Drowned Sailor follower for Vampire Counts (reported not working; see Guide to the Guide) and Aranessa’s Your Worst Nightmare skill for Vampire Coast. Pirate Treasures, Golgfag’s Seafarer big name, and Wulfrik’s Seafang’s Tribute technology also provide this 7,000 gold bonus.
Vampire Coast
Victory can also trigger a treasure-map mission roll. The sea event passes chance bonuses of 30 (ordinary battles) or 50 (Skull Reef), not fixed final probabilities.
Grom
Separate 50% roll on encounter arrival to unlock one randomly selected still-locked sea-eligible ingredient.
Repeat buffs
Receiving the same buff again adds its normal duration to the time remaining. For example, rolling a 10-turn buff with 4 turns left extends it to 14 turns.
Model
Models can narrow the event list in meaningful ways. Check Approach to each treasure type below to see how.
Approach to each treasure type
| Treasure | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Sea Corpse | No special strategy: winning the battle gives either 6,000 gold + item or 8,000 gold. |
| Shipwreck | The model tells you which factionwide buff is in the event pool: Materials at Sea or Lost Cargo. You still have only a 1-in-3 chance of rolling the event that awards that buff. |
| Mysterious Island | Choose the battle-buff option for a 50% chance of Mathlann’s Blessing, or the campaign-buff option for a 50% chance of Favourable Winds. The model determines the other possible result: The Bloody Red Spot (Frenzy) or Curse of Cannibalism (Regeneration) for the battle-buff choice; Trunk of Maps (item drop chance) or Press-Ganged (replenishment) for the campaign-buff choice. |
| Fell Cargo | Check the model before collecting it: the model tells you whether the encounter offers a battle or gives buffs without a battle. Buff encounters can be collected in Force March; use a stance that allows battles if you want to fight a battle encounter. |
| Remnants of Battle | Use the model to identify the encounter type, just as with Fell Cargo. Only one model produces battle encounters; all the others produce buff encounters. You can collect the buff encounters in Force March. |
| Skull Reef | Bring enough force to win the battle. Victory awards 20,000 gold, so prioritize collecting it when your army is ready to fight. |
